Italian Wines
Italy is almost completely covered by vineyards. Here to make wine became much earlier, than in other countries. At the time of Roman empire here the winemaking has got industrial scope, but with its falling, it also has fallen into decay because of fundamental economic and cultural changes. Because of that in Italy wine was a product of daily consumption, manufacturers did not aspire to improve its quality, therefore classification of Italian wines has been made late - only in 1967 system DOC Denominazione di Origine Controllata «the name supervised on quality», similar to the French has been entered. Occurrence of such system has allowed to improve considerably quality of made drinks and to lift prestige of the Italian wine makers. Now wines of Italy share on four categories. The small group of elite drinks of 18 kinds is included into group DOCG Denominazione di Origina Controllata et Garantita «the name supervised and guaranteed by origin». Manufacture of these wines is strictly supervised. On their labels always there is an obligatory additional information. The considerable part of drinks is recognised by corresponding to class DOC. These are the best Italian wines made from certain grades of grapes on traditional technology. Thus, very many wine makers have appeared are dissatisfied with that, improving quality of wine made by them, they cannot get to prestigious categories. Specially for them category IGT Idudicazione Geografica Tipica «instructions on manufacture area» has been entered. 128 wines have entered Into this category, before considered as dining rooms. On labels of these drinks there is an information not only on a vineyard, but also on the used grade of grapes. The wines entering into this category and keeping quality up to the mark, can get to group DOC. The considerable part of wines is made from such grades of grapes which are not cultivated more anywhere, except Italy, therefore have no great popularity among the consumers preferring drinks from grades known for it.
It is considered that wine territories coincide with regions administrative which twenty, but more often winemaking areas unite in four large areas - the Northwest of Italy, the Northeast, the Central and Southern parts.
